Update – June 2023

As I took a short walk around the wood near where I live in Northumberland, I couldn’t help but appreciate the beautiful weather we’ve been having lately. We’ve been blessed with absolutely stunning weather for the past three to four weeks, making the late Spring more enjoyable. It’s been lovely to spend time outdoors and take in the natural beauty of our region.

I’m out of the habit of producing short videos and updates, which has made it challenging to get back into it. But, on this beautiful day in June in Northumberland, I decided that whilst I was walking I should give a quick update:

It’s hard to believe that over a year has passed since my last update, as time has just flown by; it’s all been a blur.

Early last year (2022), I decided to ‘retire’ and slow down, and I took the Summer off, enjoying a fabulous three months of rest, recovery, and reflection. However, I missed work and got a part-time job in September, working two to three days a week.

There have been some major changes within my local church community, Morpeth Baptist Church. John, our minister and paid Elder, felt called to a pioneer ministry in Northumberland’s coastal towns, leading him to leave his position at Easter. This change has left the rest of us trying to figure out what we will do next. As the sole Elder of the church, I am very conscious that I don’t want to become the ‘de facto’ minister, as that doesn’t feed into my gifts and plans for the future.

Despite the challenges, these are exciting times with real opportunities for doing something different and pioneering as a church community in and around Morpeth.

I plan to get back into the discipline of doing a few short reflections and videos for the blog and writing about what we’ve been investigating and studying over the last year.

Reflection #13 – May 2022

Time goes by and then I realise I haven’t posted a reflection or an update for a while – so here is a short update and reflection on what I have called ‘The Foundations of Discipleship’. If I get a chance over the next couple of weeks, I want to record a short video about each of the four foundations that I identify, in broad terms, as:

  • Slowing down and making space
  • Living our identity ‘in Christ’
  • Putting on the mind of Christ
  • Keeping in step with the Spirit

I think each one deserves a separate video to unpack and provide more detail – before I then, hopefully, can apply then to specific discipleship practices, the first of which will be the practice of prayer.

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Reflection #12 – March 2022

Here is a short reflection about the Russian invasion of Ukraine – expressing my heart-break for both sides, Ukrainian and Russian families, who will see their children killed in what seems, from the comfort of my UK home, to be a totally unnecessary conflict.

I never thought there would be war again in Europe so soon after World War II – what short memories we seem to have of the destruction and desolation that war brings to everything and everyone involved.

We need to pray for wisdom and hope for a quick resolution.

Reflection #9

Here is my latest reflection, with me considering the importance of relationship and community over being right – how do we challenge others opinions and worldviews without breaking relationships and friendships?

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Reflection #8

Here is our latest video, with me and John reflecting on our recent short series of talks about Values – and discussing how Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet – as recounted in John 13 – is a great example of all the four Values, namely, community (rather than fellowship), incarnated, generosity and service.

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Values #4 – Service

Here is the fourth, and final, short talk about Values that we prepared for our church weekly service at Morpeth Baptist Church – in which I speak about the Value of Service – followed by a discussion time with John and Sergio reflecting on the ideas raised during the talk…

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Values #3 – Generosity

Here is the third in a series of short talks about Values that we prepared for our church weekly service at Morpeth Baptist Church – in which Sergio Mendes speaks about the Value of Generosity – followed by a discussion time with me and John reflecting on the ideas raised during the talk…

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Values #2 – Incarnated

It’s been a bit of a delay since my last post, but here is the second in a series of short talks about Values that we prepared for our church weekly service at Morpeth Baptist Church – in which I speak about the Value of Incarnated by considering the current cultural move towards excarnation – followed by a discussion time with John, Sergio and Sarah, one of our church worship leaders, to reflect on the ideas raised during the talk…

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.

Values #1 – Community

As outlined in my update video earlier in the week, here is the first in a series of short talks about Values that we prepared for our church weekly service at Morpeth Baptist Church – in which John Cooper unpacks the Value of Community by considering the importance of communion, communitas and compassion – followed by a discussion time with Martin Luff and Sergio Mendes to develop further the ideas raised by John during his talk…

I hope you enjoy it and find it useful – please leave a comment and/ or ask a question if you want to start a dialogue with us.
